Are Bath Bombs Safe for Your Pipes?

Bath bombs have long been a popular way of sprucing up your soak. Perhaps you received some bath bombs for Valentine’s Day, perhaps they were a birthday gift, or perhaps you just had a long week at work and decided to treat yourself. But before you fill up that tub, it might be worth considering what bath bombs could do to your plumbing.

Unfortunately, bath bombs are not very safe for your pipes and can cause them to clog. There are preventative measures you can take to stop this, though, some of which this article will cover.

If you’re reading this article because your pipes have already been clogged by bath bomb debris, don’t worry!

Here at Mid Suffolk Cesspool, drain cleaning is one of the many services we provide. Contact us today for a free quote

How Do Bath Bombs Clog Your Pipes?

It’s true: bath bombs can clog your pipes if you’re not careful about how you use them.

If your plumbing system is old or if you use bath bombs quite frequently, you increase your risk of blocked pipes.

There are a few different ingredients in bath bombs that can be bad for your pipes.

These are:

  • Salt: If the salts in your bath bombs don’t dissolve fully, there is a chance they will get stuck in your drains along with hair and other bits of debris, causing clogs.
  • Essential oils: Many bath bombs contain essential oils. The problem with this is that oils can solidify in your pipes, causing clogs.
  • Decorations: Any decorations from the bath bombs that get into your pipes—for example, glitter, petals, or confetti—can cause difficulties.
How to Stop Bath Bombs Clogging Your Pipes

It is best to try and prevent bath bombs from clogging your pipes.

There are several preventative options available to you:

  • Use a drain filter: This method couldn’t be simpler. Drain filters are easy to find and easy to use. Just pop one in your drain, and it should catch any bits of debris that might cause a problem.
  • Clean your drains regularly: You can do this with everyday products you’ll find in your cupboards. White vinegar can be used for regular cleans, and you can use a combination of vinegar and baking soda on small clogs.
  • Make your own bath bombs: This requires a little more work, but bath bombs are relatively simple to make. If you make your own, you know exactly what’s going into them and can avoid oils or decorative ingredients

You may find that, despite your best efforts, your pipes get clogged because of bath bombs. If this happens, it’s certainly not the end of the world! Calling a professional plumber is your best course of action at this point.

Left untreated, the clog could become far worse and more costly to deal with, so it’s best to deal with it as soon as possible.
