Summer’s Here: It’s Time to Check Your Septic System
It’s summertime… the weather is hot, the air is humid, and severe thunderstorms are rolling across the nation. Perhaps your septic maintenance is the last thing on your mind.

If so, we’d like to change that! With the extra humidity and rainfall that occurs in the summer, you need to make sure your septic system is in good condition. Otherwise, you risk getting into a very stinky situation.
So, here’s what should be on your summer cesspool maintenance checklist:
- Make sure the septic area is clear. The whole drain field should be kept free of traffic, and you should never park your car on it. It’s especially important to keep the area clear in the summer, when there’s a higher risk of flooding.
- Check your landscaping. Is there too much greenery near your septic system? Their roots will seek out water sources, and this can include your septic system. Once the roots take hold, they could potentially damage your system. It’s best to avoid planting anything that grows long roots in the first place, but if you’ve already done that, look into replanting them elsewhere.
- Be careful with lawn maintenance. If you’re using a riding lawn mower, avoid riding in the septic area. Summer rainfall can erode dirt and expose your septic lines, and a heavy mower will put too much pressure on them.
- Space out your water-heavy activities. Your septic system should handle quite a bit of water, but excessive amounts may cause issues. For example, if you empty a bathtub, run a dishwasher, and use the washing machine all at once, it’s putting a lot of pressure on your septic system.
- Schedule a pumping. You should get your septic system serviced every 2-3 years. If it’s time for that, reach out to us at Mid-Suffolk Cesspool. We offer expert, affordable services!
What if damage has already been done? What signs should you look out for?
One of the most common signs is pooling water that isn’t associated with recent rainfall. It might look like a large puddle around your septic system’s drain field. This indicates that your tank is full and that it needs professional help.
Another sign is that your tub and sinks are draining slower than usual. In this case, your septic system isn’t working as efficiently as it could be.
And one more thing to look out for: incredibly healthy grass around your septic system. This indicates that your system is full and that the plant roots are pulling up moisture.
So, whether you need regular septic maintenance or emergency services, we’ve got you covered at Mid-Suffolk Cesspool this summer! Give us a call at 631-581-0036
